About

BACKGROUND AND AIMS

Research in language, culture, and education has been exponentially developing in the face of tremendous many challenges, most recently in this time of Covid-19 pandemic. Currently, Covid-19 pandemic has abruptly changed the ways humankinds live and perceive life, one of which is in dealing with the advancement of digital technology. It is undeniable that during the pandemic, digital technology has reached an unprecedented scale as it takes part in and transforms social, economic, political, and cultural aspects significantly. Through electronic devices and resources, information reaches out places where direct interactions are limited and prohibited, making it possible for people to connect on the click of the finger regardless of time and space. However, despite its undisputed advantages in assisting communication process, culture exchanges, and teaching and learning process, digital technology presents its own complexities due to its unequal access and various receptions. The diverse platforms of social media and multimedia may give the sense of greater freedom of autonomous choices, but one may not be aware of the ineffective or the excessive use of the information transferred through these media.  It raises questions on, for instance, how people with limited access to the internet survive the online learning, whether digital technology today has created more distinct polarization than before, and whether digital technology has truly increased social engagement.  Consequently, digital literacy -the ability to find, use, create and understand the limitations of technology - is a must in navigating life in this disruptive era. In order to provide teachers, researchers, practitioners, and policy makers a platform to share their insights and perspectives on this issue of digital technology, this year’s ICOLLITE proposed Digital Literacies and Autonomy: Current Trends and practices in Education, Culture, and Literature Studies as its theme.

ICOLLITE, an annual conference held by Faculty of Language and Literature Education, UPI, welcomes both presenters and participants to discuss and disseminate current issues and offer solutions to the challenges of our time. Discussions on current trends in digital literacies and autonomy are expected to pave way to learn from each other for betterment as one big society of humankinds, regardless of their social, economic, and cultural backgrounds.
